Hi Debbie,

Dont know if this will help but I have a Mary Jane Brearley (b 1844) in my family tree with brother called James. I do not think this is your family but it may help to exclude them for you.

Parents were Abel & Sarah.

There is 1 other Brearley family in Rochdale with James & Mary on 1851 census- parents James & Sarah.

Contact me if you think this may be useful

Ann
It very probably is him - I have him in 51 , 61 and more likely the 1901
He just cannot seem to be found for the 30 years inbetween
Same as I dont think his father John can be found in the 1871 - John was a preacher and visited Palestine & America so Harold may have been with his father also preaching I guess
Harold's father is/was quite a famous man , he has wrote 2-3 books had a book wrote about him , has a chapel named after him - chapel for the destitute - Ashworth memorial chapel
Hence the frustration of trying to find them

Ann
Ashworth is popular but there really isnt that many Harolds for that time - or not that I can find , it came up on census searches for Harold in a request for him , dates & place match too & the profession of painter in both census's - Harolds father also was a master painter

Debbie

Debbie Report 28 May 2008 23:16

That's typical tho for my Ashworths tho isnt it Margaret ;-))

lancashireAnn Report 28 May 2008 21:41

just a thought - the marriage in 1858 did not take place in St Chad's as it states registry office or registrar attended. It was quite a big Methodist area so could have been 'registrar attended' (same applies to RC)

Would you believe, on my BVRI discs there are 1,110 Ashworth marrieges in Rochdale but not one damned Harold?

lancashireAnn

lancashireAnn Report 28 May 2008 21:27

Debbie - how did you connect the 1901 Harold & the 1861?
Ashworth is quite a common name in the Rochdale/Todmorden area - many marriages etc from the Walsden area of Tod took place in Rochdale St Chad's as that was their parish church

Yes K he wasnt into this working for a pittance either , he fought for the rights of the poor etc

K

K Report 28 May 2008 20:45

In 1861 the father John is listed as a house painter(master) employing 7 men and 3 boys so he really must have run a large business

Debbie

Debbie Report 28 May 2008 20:41

Theyre driving me nuts Mararet
I know there is a def. connection from these Ashworths to my William born abt 1880 Rochdale area
But im sure Felix died 1860 - but then did he marry before he died and have children
Then Harold just seems to dissapear after the '61 - grrrr

Debbie

Debbie Report 28 May 2008 20:36

Yes that's the John who is the master painter , author & preacher

Margaret and Debbie

Sorry I was called way by a phone call as I was relooking at the image. Having re looked at 1861 I think it says decorator not decorative and faintly after that it says paint so I think it could be still possible be the right family.

In 1841 his father is listed as a painter which I suppose could be either an artist or house panter

Right Margaret
I got this right haven't I ;
You think the Mary J in the 1851 who is Harolds wife is the mother of Sarah Lord nee Ashworth who had Mary Jane & in the 1891 Harold is dead
But then isnt Mary in the 1851 a nee Brealey - James sister

Debbie

Debbie Report 28 May 2008 20:25

Do you not think it is the same Harold , I cant seem to find many Harolds born that time that area - hmm

MargaretM

MargaretM Report 28 May 2008 20:14

Deb, I don't think he's the same Harold on the 1901 census. He's just a house painter in 1901 and that's a lot different from being an artistic painter. (No offense to any house painters in the audience)

MargaretM

MargaretM Report 28 May 2008 20:10

Good grief, Deb! Could your Ashworths get any more confusing?
I found a marriage of Harold Ernest Ashworth in 1896, Rochdale. One of the names on the page was Sarah Ann Lord.
Looked her up on the 1891 census and it's written like this:
Sarah Lord, head, widow, 52
Mary Jane Ashworth, dau, 17
Mary Ashworth, mother, widow, 81
It looks like Sarah's maiden name was Ashworth and she had an illegitimate daughter before she married the Lord. But then is she the same one who marries Harold Ernest Ashworth 5 years later?
