Could I please continue this thread by asking a question relating to it? I have found a first marriage for Horatio Nelson Ridley married to Amy Elizabeth Nixon December 1900. That's fine - but then they are shown on the census as HALL (adopted surname). In my husband's letter is states that they went onto to have a son called Patrick and both Amy and Patrick died. I cannot trace a death for either under RIDLEY or HALL. Any ideas for further research please.

Many thanks again for your time

Any idea when they died? Transcriptions are complete for deaths for that period.

No idea at all Potty - tried on FreeBMD for both of them under both surnames. I am really having problems because he married under RIDLEY but they are on the 1901 census as Hall and the 1891 census as Hall. And the later generations which I know about are also Hall.

The letter states "Horatio Nelson Ridley was known to his friends and family as Harry Hall (being adopted) - his first marriage was to Amy Elizabeth Nixon - they had a son called Patrick, both died, death unknown" The letter also states that our contact had also been unable to find a second marriage date - all I know from that marriage is that one of the children was born in 1923.
