Can someone please look up Richard Cork (may have an 'e' at end) who was born c1812 at Stone in Kent.

I have seen him on the 1881 census aged 68 and living at Trottiscliffe, Kent with a wife (Mary Ann) who is 20! I think he must have been married before as one of his sons - Daniel - is my great grandfather and was born around 1844 but I'm not sure where. Any extra details would be appreciated. Thank you.

Things seem to be taking shape a bit. Thanks. If it helps, Daniel married an Olive Martin in 1870 in Maidstone. I would dearly love to find out about Richard's first wife though.

Hi Jill, what is the likely explanation for not being on two census(i) ! I always though you were legally bound to register - have you any ideas on that? Thanks for info so far.

Jill 2011 (aka Warrior Princess of Cilla!) Report 12 May 2008 13:34

Hi Cynthia

Not sure about the legal side of things - families or individuals were quite often absent for some reason. They might have been travelling between areas on the day of the count, they might have wanted to stay "hidden", they may have just been very badly mistranscribed. I've found the latter is the more usual reason.

It's difficult to find people on 1841 partly because the ages were rounded down to the nearest 5 years and partly because it does not give place of birth - only whether or not born in county.

The other thing I've noticed is that on census returns where say, your Richard says he was born in Stone - that may not be correct. He may have been born somewhere outside of Kent - and the family may have moved to Kent when he was a small child. He may therefore have thought that's where he was born.

Well I am not convinced that Daniel is the son of Richard so I am back to the question of the marriage cert as to who is listed as the father and his occupation

Cynthia

Cynthia Report 12 May 2008 14:00

Hi all. Well, I've certainly got something to check with now. I don't have the marriage cert for Daniel and Olive, just info from a relative - 11.6.1870 at The Zion Chapel, Brewery Lane, Maidstone. I think I may apply for it just to make sure. Olive apparently died in the 1880s after having about 7 children because Daniel then either married or lived with a Louise Kimber and had six more children! Thanks for your continued searching.

Cynthia

Cynthia Report 16 May 2008 20:38

Am waiting for Daniels marriage certificate to arrive. Meanwhile, in trying to sort this lot out, can some kind person please see if they can find him or his family on the 1891or 1901 census? There should be a daughter Daisy born c1885 somewhere about. Thanks.
