Boreham might be in Essex but no other census shows them born in Essex. The 1881 is very faint & badly mistranscribed.

Wow, many thanks for all the work. My interest is indeed Martha Amelia (my grandmother on my mothers side) and her sister Lillian. Lillian I belive became a dresser to Marie lloyd a famous music hall singer ("My old man said follow the van ...")

You have travelled the same route as I regarding links Bishop / Frike. No success. The possibility of Tribe is really interesting so I'll be lloking at the records and following links.

Martha Amelia was daughter of William Henry Bishop, publican, as shown on marriage cert. The brith certs of Martha and Lillian both show their mother's family name as Anderson. However, on Martha's cert her mother is named as Martha Bishop formerly Anderson but the signature is "X Mary Anderson her mark". Lillians mother is named as M Bishop formerly Anderson.

BUT no Frike or Tribe!

Finally Boreham Essex does exist (Nr Chelmsford). It was clay quarrying / brick making country and many workers moved to Poplar / Limehouse to build housing in the 1850s.

I think my next step is to try to trace the Anderson line.

I've just noticed that on the same page there is an Eliza Tribe, age 20, working as a servant for an elderley couple.

Possibility: there are 2 other John Tribe/Jane marriages about that time, but only this Jane comes from Shoreham. And look at the address!
