I'm having trouble with finding the marriage for my great great grandparents, I would love to know my great great grandmother's surname. I don't know the exact date but it's around 1880. I know where she was born and approx. age from the census. Their names are Joseph Richmond and Ruth (born c.1855, in Middleton on the Wold, Yorks). Their first child was also born here.

My husband is also have trouble finding the marriage of his great grandparents, this marriage would have been about 1890. Their names are John Jackson and Mary J. (b. c1868). I know Mary was born in Sproxton, Leics. I'm not sure whether the marriage was in Leics or Lincs because John is from Lincs and their children were born in Lincs.

Any ideas? Thanks

Heather

Have you looked on freebmd - its free - where have you looked so far.

When was the first child born? Buy the birth cert for mums maiden name. You do have to spend some ,money to ensure you have the right info and to move onwards

I hope you will go to freebmd and find these yourself and then buy the certificates to get back a further generation - certs are £7 from GRO online with the GRO ref which you get from the freebmd result.

Do go there and look for yourself, its so much more satisfying.

This is a possible marriage on freebmd site

Marriages Mar 1874

Gell Ruth Driffield 9d 468
Richmond Joseph Driffield 9d 468

Rather than guess at a marriage it would be better to get Ruth's surname from a child, - your ancestor's birth certificate.

Thanks for your help. I think I will get the birth certificate. Gwyn the one you found looks possible middleton is only 9.4 miles from driffield.

The Jackson family moved around a lot, so it's hard to determine the place exactly, but finding the birth certificate would work. The first Jackson child, John, was born in Great Grimsby.

I also looked for Richmond but the are many in the area because it's a local name. The certificate would work there too.

Driffield is not necessarily the place of marriage.
The registration district is Driffield.....which covers many places, including Middleton.

Ok, yes I understand that now.

Selina Richmond was born June 1880, I'm writing the application on GRO now.

Do you receive a photocopy of the original from GRO?

You can use GRO online - using the GRO ref from freebmd you just complete the info online and pay £7. Yes you do usually get a photocopy of the original unless its really a poor copy and they rewrite it but Ive only had that once in dozens of certs.

Welham is also the place where their second child George was born in 1892.

Yes I've seen that a while ago but didn't count it because it said Stonesby instead of Sproxton.

Never buy certs from anywhere online except from the official GRO site - some poor souls have been scammed and paid up to £50 for a £7 cert. Make a note of this addy as I dare say you will be using it a lot now. Also, get a sub to ancestry.co.uk - dont buy units on here or anywhere else, its far too expensive, the sub covers you 24/7 no extras and has lots more - get a free 14 day trial

Anyway in case you didnt note it - GRO online is:

The other thing Melanie, dont always expect details to be exact on census info, it just depends on who gave it and whether it was copied correctly - read the tips for newbies on Tips Board.

It looks interesting though is it possible the birth place is wrong? or is Stonesby the district or something?

*Melanie*

*Melanie* Report 19 Jan 2008 11:35

I don't think it's that one because she was married around 1889 because her first child was born in 1890.

Good advice, I was thinking about getting a sub on ancestry but wasn't sure.
