Find Ancestors

To Whom This May Concern
Although I'm sure all of us who are trying to find our ancestors really do appreciate help in these matters, I am not, (as others) not as yet, used to posting the information. If helpers did just take a little time to look at the message again, they may find the content given is actually extra information asked for by other helpers. It may also point out that the question asked in the first message has actually not been answered correctly and so the person is trying to explain what it is they are looking for. Please do not be too quick to criticise withoug actually looking. Thank you.

I can understand what you are saying Josephine. The problem is that you will almost inevitably get asked the same questions by the same people!
Trust me, if you need extra info it really is best to stick to one post. People who try to help out will find it impossible to move around between different posts and help successfully.

You may find it beneficial in such circumstances to click edit on your original request and add the new question, thus keeping all the information on one thread.

Why do helpers actually not read the message correctly in the first place. I asked for information of parents of James Burrows and not James Burrows himself (which I already have). If helpers do not read the question properly, it is most frustrating for the writer.

OK, Michael, I will try that if I use this board again. As I say, I am only just getting used to it, we are all allowed an odd mistake. It feels like I am getting a "telling off" for not knowing.

You do have a point - sometimes we are a bit over-keen and don't read it correctly, and give all sorts of unasked for stuff! You just have to point this out. Make sure your queries are clear though, sometimes they are a bit difficult to interpret. And don't forget that what seem like pointless questions can actually help the researchers.
I know some people come across as a little abrupt - me maybe! - but it's just a bit of frustration creeping in I suspect.

I have tried nudging a previous plea for help, and editing the subject to say still looking but it seems that people dont look as it says there are various replies, so i assume they assume its been answered!!??

Those who "know the ropes" are just trying to make sure people are aware of how best to use this board.
Don't be put off. Most of it is good advice - honest !

Kim, if you want to refresh a thread I suggest you put date in the heading - I assume you have already nudged it to the top by adding a post?
If desperate, start a new thread asking people to go to the other one to help you!!

i added a post, but i also changed the subject heading to read Still looking.. And no one else did lol.

There are some great people out there helping and there are those of us who aint got a clue what we're doing, but we all have to start somewhere

I have a couple of threads with no replies. I don't think they were ignored, just too difficult to solve.

Don't do that, put "desperate for more help" and the date!! As a last resort, PM someone who has been very helpful and ask them to please go back. I have actually started threads when i get in a mess helping people to ask for others to have a look, this works a treat.

On the parents issue, i would also repeat the data found on the person themselves, to enable me to have something tangable to 'stare' at while i am searching for the other data.

It's very weird i know, but i like to have a base from which to start, even if it means repeating something found previously for you.

Totally agree Michael- i need to focus on the family. So i often paste a census onto the thread (usually to be told "I already have that"!). It just makes a difference, and often this way you find clues.
I also annoyingly check the info provided!

It's sometimes not checking the data given that causes the problems!!

I have been on numerous threads whereby we cannot find anything, only to go and check the name or place/date required to find a slight difference in the detail, the difference means finding then the second time around.

Sometimes (and i know i do it all the time) people ignore a thread with numerous replies wrongly thinking people are on the case and not wishing to step in 'late'....i know i'm guilty of it myself, i see a thread with 20+ replies and i don't even open it. Even tho i know there is a possibility i could well have the right answers....
