Hi, thanks for looking at this post!
I'm trying to find more information about the Jordan's in my family.
My Great Great Great grandfather Patrick Jordan (b.c.1835-d1875) and his brother William (c1840-1913) and sister Anne (c1840-1911, married Gill) came to Montreal from Ireland probably before 1860.
Patrick Jordan married a woman Mary and they had 2 children in Montreal: Margaret (c1870-1934, married Laramee) and James Jordan (1870-1921).
James Jordan married Mary Scott (1873-1945) and they had two daughters Maude and Florence, so my Jordan's end here. Maude is my great grandmother!
Basically I would like to know if there are any other Jordan relatives out there and if we know where this Jordan family came from in Ireland.
I don't live in Montreal/Canada anymore, all the info we have to go by is the information related to our family burial plot and confirmation from the 1911 Canadian census that James Jordan exists. As far as I am aware, all the Jordan family related to me who emigrated to Montreal is buried in the same plot in Montreal.
I hope someone has any leads, please get in touch.
Kind regards
Devon

I don't pay for full access to Canadian records at Ancestry. (My ancestors didn't immigration to Canada until after 1900 so Cdn records aren't much use to me!)
But a basic search of records at Ancestry.ca
http://www.ancestry.ca/search/default.aspx
for Patrick Jordan born 1835 produces a couple of results that would be worth looking at.
1861 census Name: Patrick Jordan Birth: 1834 - location Residence: Montréal, Canada East
1871 census Name: Patrick Jordan Birth: abt 1834 - location Residence: township, Montreal Centre, Quebec
... However, searching the 1861 census
http://search.ancestry.ca/search/db.aspx?dbid=1570
for surname Jordan in Canada East born in Ireland (for an exact match) doesn't produce your people.
It would certainly be worth doing some searching in the early Cdn censuses though. Also, BMD records in the Drouin Index, available at Ancestry, could contain family info (e.g. father's name, on a marriage record).
The 1881 census is available free of charge here:
http://www.familysearch.org/eng/search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=census/search_census.asp
... but I'm not seeing your people there.
What I was wondering was whether they came to Canada with their parents, and the parents might be with them in the 1861 census, e.g. Maybe someone here with worldwide Ancestry access with have better luck!

"Irelandaise" is French for "Irish". The census forms in Quebec/Lower Canada were completed in French.
Other than that, the info doesn't seem to match in that one, though ...

Thanks for your replies everyone! This is great stuff...
I especially think the posts by Maude are most relevant, this is why;
Buried in the family plot are what we think are two wives of Patrick Jordan b. c.1835. - In the cemetery records the deceased are listed as Mary Furlay 1839 and Mary Jordan 1889. It has always confused us.
Finlay is pretty close to Furlay - there perhaps was a spelling mistake somewhere? Odd that there is no Alice Jane listed in the cemetery, would she have renamed herself Mary or could this be a middle name or another mistake? This remarriage by Patrick would explain the burials associated with him in our plot, but still unsure.
We have no record of a son but perhaps he died in early childhood? Wonder why he wouldn't have been buried in the family plot? Patrick definitely had a daughter Margaret, we we never sure when she was born, but she was buried in 1937. The son James Jordan was definitely born around 1870 and was buried 1921. Interesting that Margaret and James may have been half brother and sister...
The further link you found Maude, James P Jordan's marriage has to be my family. Ma(r)y parents match exactly with what I have, and I think the mother's name is Toohey, all this Scott information coming from the other family plot in Montreal for the Scott family. It all matches up.
Are you able to tell if the parents of Patrick Jordan bc1835 were in Canada or if you can tell when they might have come over from Ireland?
Thanks so much for all your help,
Devon

Out of curiosity I tried to look at the pilot site of the Drouin records, based on the information below about Margaret Jordan b1864.
(http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#c=1321742;s=waypointsOnly;w=0;p=waypoint) is the link.
Anyhow, you can see the actual record and signature of the people present at her baptism! The record says: the 28th april 1864 we the undersigned priest have baptized Margaret born yesterday on the careful marriage of Patrick Jordan (word i can't read), and of Ellen Findley of this parish. The sponsors(?) were John Joseph Curran and Alice Jane Brankin' and then they have signed the register.
I then looked up the same record for the son, Francis Fred Ed, and found it on the 31st of December: '31 December 1865 we the undesigned priest have baptized Francis Frederick Edward, born on the twentyninth, infant of the careful marriage of Patrick Joseph Jorden, lumber merchant, and Ellen Finley of this parish, the sponsors(?) were Owen Joseph Devlin and Julia Emma Finlay undersigned with the father.
I could not find the marriage record on this search for the dates 25/11/1861 and almost all of December in this parish. but maybe I have to look earlier instead of later.
I would never have found this information on the Drouin if it hadn't been for the parish names, thanks again!

Glad to have kickstarted this for you Devon! It was sinking rapidly, I think because most people here see "Canada" and think they won't be able to help; I think I *should* be able to help even if I can't. ;)
I've been so miserably sick this week I'm running about 40 IQ points down and can't even follow what's in the thread now, but it looks like you're well on your way. Good luck!

OK, I think I’m officially confused now!
If my Patrick Jordan (bc1835) remarried Alice Brankin in 1869 after the death of Mary Finlay c 1868, it would appear as though not all the Jordan’s from my family are buried in the family plot. Alice Brankin is not, for one, and neither are Francis Fred Ed b 21/12/1865 or Mary Jordan age 9 in 1871 or Edward J age 8mths in 1871.
If the information posted by Fanny on 10 March is correct, there are many more children associated with my Jordan family than previously thought. If we look at the dates in Fanny’s post, from the 1871 census, Patrick was then married to Alice and it would appear as though the only children born from that marriage would have been (James) Patrick 4 yrs and Edward J Jordan who was 8mths in 1871.
There could have been another child after this, but Maura’s post of 11 March shows that Alice also died soon after in 1872. The age of the children in Fanny’s post of the 1871 census point to Mary Jordan (bc1862), Maggie (bc 1865) as having Mary E Finlay as a mom. So when Patrick Jordan remarried Alice Brankin would have had 2 children by him: my direct descendent (James) Patrick Jordan in 1869/70 and Edward J. Jordan in 1870/71. How sad to have 2 wives die pretty soon after another, if this is all true!
Back to the family plot in the Montreal cemetery, If Mary Jordan who died in 1889 was Edward Jordan’s wife, parents of my Great Great Great grandfather Patrick Jordan (b.c.1835-d1875) and his brother William (c1840-1913) and sister Anne (c1840-1911, married Gill), then we can see that Edward Jordan was also not buried in the family plot. This also leaves the mystery woman named Mary (Banan) Conroy who died the same year and was buried on the same day as Mary Jordan in 25/08/1889. We still can’t find any relation to my family but she must be linked somehow!

Thanks for that additional info!
Is it possible to find other siblings related to the original family Patrick Jordan (b.c.1835-d1875) and his brother William (c1840-1913) and sister Anne (c1840-1911, married Gill) who are buried in the family plot? These should have the parents Edward and Mary - and can anyone see more about this couple?
Odd that the death date is off by 9 years for Mary Banan Conroy - but this has to be her family link! I found the info on the 1852 Ca census, they must have gotten Hoey wrong and put the surname as Ohio, if the lead is right! Still no clue why she is buried with our family... 1852 Canada Census Home / 1852 / Canada East / Huntingdon (county) / 142 Chateauguay parish [St. Joachi... / p. 3d, 4a, (7) 12 Bannan, Patrick Cultivateur Canada Catholique romaine 52 M 13 Ohio, Elisabeth Épouse Canada Catholique romaine 40 F 14 Bannan, John Journalier Canada Catholique romaine 18 M 15 Bannan, Marie** Canada Catholique romaine 15 F 16 Bannan, Marguerite Canada Catholique romaine 13 F 17 Bannan, Elisabeth Canada Catholique romaine 11 F 18 Bannan, Mathew Canada Catholique romaine 10 M 19 Bannan, Rose Canada Catholique romaine 6 F 20 Bannan, Patrick Canada Catholique romaine 5 M 21 Bannan, Catherine Canada Catholique romaine 2 F

Wow, Maura, I wish i could get you a virtual pint for all your help!
The picture of my family tree is starting to clear up a wee bit! The beginning of my family tree looks like this now:
Edward Jordan = Mary (d1889) (both born in Ireland?) +Patrick Jordan (b.1834 - bu01/09/1875) = Mary Ellen Finlay (bu10/08/1867) they married c.25.11.1861 +Mary Ann (b1862-bu02/11/1911) = Joseph Horace Gill +Margaret (b28/04/1864-bu24/10/1934 = Laramee +Francis Frederick Edward (b30/12/1865, bapt 31/12/65) +Joseph Patrick (bSept1867) 2nd marriage = Alice Jane Brankin in 1869. (d1872) +Edward J(ohn?) (b1870) +William Frederick (b04/04/1872-bu05/07/1913) +James Patrick (b Aug 1871–bu14/09/1921) = Ma(r)y Scott in 1892 All of the children would have been under 13 years of age when Patrick died preceded by his two wives. This could explain why the children may have been dispersed amongst family, particularly William Jordan was living with his aunt & uncle Elizabeth & Edward Brankin, cousins and grandmother.
Patrick b 1834 must have had brothers and sisters. Can you see if Edward and Mary had any other children. Are you able to tell if/when they emigrated to Canada? Or anything else about them?
Interesting about the Mall's below. I went on the cemetery records and found an Elizabeth Brankin married to a Wall buried 02/06/1921.The list of deceased in that plot also include James Brankin buried 03/05/1884, M.Ann Brankin (married O'Brien) buried 20/11/1855 and Alice Jane Brankin's mother Alice Tuff who married Edward Brankin. She was buried 24/04/1895.
