Hi, I am trying to find the marriage of Henry Brown to a Sarah Mattock. I assume it is in the district Brentford, Middlesex. My great grandfather (their son) was born June 1871 so I imagine it was before that year.
If anyone could please help me I would be very grateful!!

Many Thanks
Karen

can't find a marriage on freebmd to Sarah Mattock but there is one in 1878 to Sarah Matlock

Heather Report 16 Dec 2008 14:46

Have you checked on freebmd yourself? How did you get mums maiden name? Was it on a birth cert?

NB, Matlock could easily be confused for Mattock if you are reading a birth cert. but that 1878 marriage is in Lougborough.

Hi Lancashire Ann

I did wonder if it was Mattock, Matlock or Maltock. As you never know just by reading a Birth certificate. Thanks for your help.

Hi Heather

Yes I got the maiden name from my Great Grandfathers birth Certificate. It says Father Henry Brown. Mother Sarah Brown formerly Sarah Mattock. He was born in the Chiswick area so would have been registered in Brentford, Middlesex. I assume they were from that area too. Yes I have tried Freebmd.

Thanks for your help.

Karen

Hi Julie

Correct area and possibly the right family. On the 1881 census it has my great grandfather as living with someone else and they refer to him as a stepson?? So now I'm baffled!!

Appreciate your help

Hi Catherine

It could be I've been assuming to much with staying in the Chiswick area. Its a side of the family that nobody knows much about unfortunately so I'm afraid I don't know any siblings names. Any ideas where I can go to find more info on the marriage.

Grateful for all your help

Hi Julie

I know it is confusing. I assume as my great grandfather was called Frederick James Brown then that is him on the census in Chiswick. But why do they refer to him as Stepson???

Karen

Julie Report 16 Dec 2008 15:59

Karen

I have no idea about that one.....Do you have Fredericks B/C

Karen

Karen Report 16 Dec 2008 16:01

Yes I do

Julie

Julie Report 16 Dec 2008 16:14

And does it say that his parents were Henry & Sarah...Also what was Henrys occupation

I have just traced the Wise's back through the census and still don't know what Frederick has to do with them

Catherine

Catherine Report 16 Dec 2008 16:16

Had to slip out, just got back.

I'm a bit confused now! I had a look at the 1881 census and I'm wondering why you think that this is the Frederick that you are looking for.
Step Son usually means that the child is the son of the Wife but here the Wife's name is Ellen and you say that the birth cert. gives mothers maiden name as Sarah Mattock.

for ref. the 1881 census:-
Name: Frederick J. Brown
Age: 10
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1871
Relation: Step Son
Mother's Name: Ellen E.
Gender: Male
Where born: Chiswick, Middlesex, England

Civil Parish: Chiswick
County/Island: Middlesex
Country: England

Street address: 22 Back Lane

Occupation: Scholar

Registration district: Brentford
Sub registration district: Chiswick
ED, institution, or vessel: 10
Neighbors: View others on page
Household Members:
Name Age
George W. Jackson 36
Ellen E. Jackson 35
Ernest W. Jackson 7
Frederick J. Brown 10
Ellen E. Wise 5
John F. Wise 39

Karen

Karen Report 16 Dec 2008 16:18

Yes Julie

It says his Father is Henry Brown. His mother Sarah Brown formerly Mattock. His fathers occupation was Garden Labourer.

Karen

Karen Report 16 Dec 2008 16:22

I think Catherine I assumed as it said Frederick J. Brown that he was the one I was looking for. On the 1881 census of Sarah and Henry Brown living in Chiswick it doesn't state a Frederick living with them.
