My vote is for the March 1880 b.cert.
My vote is against Christine's math - someone aged 34y 193d on 29/9/1914 would be born 1880 (actually 20/3/1880 - are you sure the b.cert reads 24th).
His age on census should always end in 1 (census date varies 30/3- 7/4 thru 1851-1911 - always a Sunday at midnight).

Christine, in case you wanted to put a physical picture to Langbourne Buildings, although as a child visiting their in the 60's they seemed magical. The stairway was in the center and it was cut into the stone and was circular, made an echo as you went up them. The doors were huge, and had big knockers, even at 12, when I was about 5'3' tall, I could not reach the knocker even on tiptoe. They resonated when they were knocked on. It was awesome to us kids. The street had bollards at one end and still had the old gas lights, although they were unused. There were three or four buildings on the street, the middle block overlooked the entrance and yard of St Mark's church and school. Mark Street was between Leonard St and Luke Street, London EC2 if you can google map it.

All I can say is that we are agreed that you have the correct birth cert for him with father George and mother Mary ann, going on all the census and war records...
It all adds up to it.

Christine

Christine Report 23 Oct 2010 19:40

Ok, so its 1880 not 1879, and I do have then the right george Anderson for 1880.

Can you put up his WW1 Arny number and regiment please?

Christine

Christine Report 23 Oct 2010 19:24

Yes this is right Georgette is george who died the same year as his dad and I knew Lilian.

Christine

Christine Report 23 Oct 2010 19:22

So do you all think the WW1 records are wrong, they ask for Height, Weight, Chest size, Hair colour so why didn't they just ask for his date of birth and not his age, this would be so simple.

Agreed with the 1880, and it fits that 1901 census.

FannyByGaslight

FannyByGaslight Report 23 Oct 2010 19:14

Not the 1879 birth then as it is all wrong, but the 1880 looks correct to me.
What the rest of you say?

Christine

Christine Report 23 Oct 2010 19:07

The other birth cert. shows george anderson 28th March 1880 B/Green, father George anderson, job - Coachman, his mother is Mary Ann Shipp.
I thought that if I counted back and worked out when he was born by the WW1 records then that would be right, but I can't find a George Anderson born 1879 under Shoreditch, Bethnal Green.

Christine

Christine Report 23 Oct 2010 19:03

the cert. birth is george anderson, born 27th Sept 1879 B/Green, Father is Henry James Anderson, job, Druggists Warhouseman and mother Martha Whittaker.

Christine

Christine Report 23 Oct 2010 19:01

The marriage cert. shows George Anderson marries Annie Gladden his age is 24 (1880) job - Carman, address Bromley, father - George Anderson Carman.
date is the 9th May 1904.

MarieCeleste Report 23 Oct 2010 18:56

Christine, at the time of census they gave their age, not the year they were born. The enumerator then estimated the year of birth. Depending on the date of the census and their actual birthday you can get the variation of a year or so.

Never take the census year of birth as 100% accurate.

FannyByGaslight

FannyByGaslight Report 23 Oct 2010 18:55

Christine.
You say the 1879 cert has father George ,can you give the other details from it please.
Mothers name/
Fathers occupation?
Address?
His exact date of birth.

Census were taken at different times and if his birthday were one side of the date then he would be 1880 on one and 1879 on another.
Same as on his marriage cert, depended when his birthday was..
And you are lucky he seems to know when and where he was born as many peoples birth years on marriage and census are YEARS out.

Christine

Christine Report 23 Oct 2010 18:54

Yes this is one that I found to, could this census just have the year 1880 wrong and he is actually 1879.

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 23 Oct 2010 18:53
