Sorry you are correct about my g/mother, Emma Saunders is Rosa Annie's mother. Marriage certificate shows John Bradfords father as also a John Bradford Dec'd at time of my g/fathers marriage to Rosa, I am able to trace my grandparents, place and time of death to Barkingside in the 1930's, from records of Births ect I have found 5 Children 2 daughtes and 3 sons all now dec'd

I Have found the Gair family living in the London area at about the correct time, the question is how did he find himself living in Norfolk in the late 1890's along way from north London even alowing that rail travel was possible.

Jill 2011 (aka Warrior Princess of Cilla!) Report 13 Jul 2008 15:44

Maybe he met his wife somewhere other than Norfolk and they decided to settle there instead of London. What was his occupation? Maybe he had more chance of finding work in Norfolk. Perhaps her family helped financially?

If you can trace her family back you might be able to find a will of one of them - NOAH is Norfolk's online site and a lot of early wills are on there- maybe that might help ...

Or perhaps there was a bit of scandal? I have one couple who married in 1885 in Kensington. He was from Herts, she was from Norfolk. I assume they met in London. They settled in Sevenoaks in Kent. I've no idea why but it may be that the first child was born in the same quarter as the marriage and may not have been his. Perhaps her family (who were reasonably well off) paid him off to marry her and take her away from Norfolk! I have no idea but that's one of my theories.

What was his occupation? I dont think Norwich is much of a distance even then. May be they were both servants in London at the time of meeting? Or his family were originally from Norfolk area - there could be lots of reasons.

Who is he related to in the Gair family? Have you traced the marriage of Wm Gair and Hannah?

Eileen

Eileen Report 13 Jul 2008 16:19

According to Marriage Cert, he was a baker, Rosa was not working although had been a dress makers assistant in her teens, no money on her side that I can see Rosa's father was a Coal Carter prior to his death.

Not sure that he is related to the Gair family still need to find proof have not looked at the marriage of Wm and Hannah as yet.

I have some records of Bradford's from Norwich.

This one as far as I'm aware doesnt fit into my tree.

I have a burial record for an Arthur John Bradford aged 4 months of Lakenham at Earlham Cementry Section i, plot 567 on 14/08/1899 son of John Bradford (journeyman baker).

I also have another burial record for a Percy Albert Bradford on 30/03/1901 from St Mark Lakenham at Earlham Cementry Section j, plot 376 aged 2 months but his father also John he was a grocer's porter, which 1901 census shows his profession.

There should be a records of these deaths at Norwich Records Office. I maybe able to check if these exist the next few days and see if they match the same address as the census.

Eileen

Eileen Report 13 Jul 2008 19:16

I think that the information about Percy Albert Bradford could be correct, given that my g/parents married in Dec 1898, at the Parish Church. Parish of St Stephens Norwich.( is this an anglican or catholic parish) It would be strange that no children where born prior to Alice who was born in West Ham Feb 1905! from what little my father told me about his family his parents had lived in Norfolk, prior to moving to Essex. I have copies of 5 B/C all showing John Bradford and Rosa Annie Saunders as the parents.

Not sure if this might be a connection
marriage sept 1850
sept quarter

page 307
8 names on index page include
Matilda Bradford and Henry Gair

Have not been able to find them on 1851 census found a Henry with Elizabeth and there is a Elizabeth Horton on the index page so think that would be the match

Hi Janice, keeping an open mind about the Gair family, found referrance to a number of Gair's in BDM records placing them in various parts of England mainly in the North East, but one Wm Gair was married in Pancras Jan 1857 quarter

St Stephens parish church I believe would have been C of E.

Have some records. From Vaccinations (MF1207) & Death records (MF1192) at NRO. Note both died before vaccinated. These records do not list the mother, however I am sure there is a match with Percy Albert Bradford as same address as 1901 census.

Percy Albert Bradford born 25/01/1901 of 3 Hills Passage, Trafalgar Street, Lakenham - son of John Bradford (Grocer's Porter) - died on 25/03/1901 of same address, aged 2 months, of marasmus convulsions.

Although you are unsure if there is a connection with Arthur John Bradford, maybe possible if she was pregnant at the time of marriage, as he may have had no family they returned to her home parish to marry and stayed in Norwich area to be with her family and have some help with the birth(s). The only way to prove, if AJB is a relation is to order the full birth certificate (this can get costly).

However his information:-

Arthur John Bradford born 23/03/1899 at 2 Leighton Row, Trafalgar Steet, Lakenham - son of John Bradford (baker (journeyman)) - died 10/08/1899 of same address, aged 4 months, of Marasmus Diarrhoea.

Hi Graham,

Thank you for all the information you have provided, as to expense I know all about that, as I had no starting point for my fathers family the purchase of a large number of B/C, M/C and D/C's over past year has been the begining of what could be a long jounery in trying to find my family history.

What I do know is that John Bradford and Rosa Annie Saunders had five children, 4 survived into Adulthood.

Records I have found Alice Blance born 1905 West Ham she married and has a least one daughter, Ada Louisa born 1909 West Ham have not found a marriage or death for her, my father Philip Sidney John 1910.West Ham. Stanley George born 1916 Romford, married from the death records it seems his widow Cecila Doris Bradford was living in Essex till about 2006, still need to contact the records office in Essex to see if a death has be recored in the past 2yrs. Clifford born 1919 Romford died aged 3yrs in 1921.

Rose Annie died in 1931 at home in Barkingside, death registed by Alice. John died at Barts Hosptial 1934 at the time of his death he worked as a scaffolder, his death was registered by A Bradford son!!!!, but have not been able to plot him into the family.

My Grandparents along with Clifford are buried at Rippleside, Barking.

We visited Rippleside in late 2007, and while it took sometime, my husband found their grave.

Hi again.

I though I would look at the 1891 census for Rosa Annie Saunders family, these records show she had a number of brothers, Percy born about 1882 and Albert born about 1890
