My grandfather (my namesake) was born between 1871 and 1874 and married Robina Anderson(Beanie) in 1912. I have this marriage certificate. He was a widower with connections to Ireland-a son and daughter from his first marriage. My grandparents lived in Liverpool and my mother Jessica Robina was born in 1914 and died last year. There were relatives in Kent-I think on my grandfather's side. Have just now found him on 1911 census, still married to his first wife Winifred. It says he was born in Liverpool, so am gradually finding out more. He entered himself as W. George Ashley on census. His age was 40 and Winifred's 28 on 1911 census, but think he was a bit younger. Married for 3 years. He was a dock labourer. |

Looks as though it must be correct as this looks like his first marriage:- |

"If" his father was also William, then this is a possible marriage for his parents:- |

William George's father was John and he was a flatman, so that ties in with 1881 census and his mother being Ann, a flatman's wife. On 1912 marriage certificate William George's age is given as 38, but he had put 40 on 1911 census. |

OK so you can ignore the marriage in 1870. |

Looks as though William George changed his name around after the death of his wife Mary Winifred. |

Wondering if John Ashley, born 1842 married twice. In 1991 census he is listed with wife, Mary, son Henry 11(that tallies) and a stepson and other children. He is barge waterman-think that is similar to flatman? Not sure that he is same person. |
