Ah, now realise there must be 2 Higher Waltons. The one near Preston is nowhere near Warrington even accounting for boundary changes. No wonder I'd never heard of Moons Mill.

I think Higher Walton near Preston and Warrington are one in the same,if you google it gives info and the changing bounderies.

I think that christening of daughter Ann is far too early to be the Nancy Ashton I'm looking for and there's no mention of Peter being deceased on Ann's wedding cert of 1845.

Could well be. Must admit I hadn't searched Aston.
This would explain why Peter isn't described as deceased in 1845.
However, still doesn't give me Nancy's mother,assuming Sarah is the same Sarah described as Stepmother in later censuses.

Jane Aston is correct age for being a step-sister in later censuses, it is just John Aston's age that is 10 years out, and if Nancy has an illegitimate child she does not have to be with the family.

Looks promising but Ann's dob is about 10 years too early. All other info point to her being born c1811

If you got to www.rootsweb.com put Peter in search then born 1780 it gives about three trees on him,but it doesn't give the names of his children.

But there was Hamlet Ashtons born in Farnworth which would connect to him having hamlet 1803 in great sankey.

If that's him it's a real breakthrough.
I was led down the wrong path because on Nancy's marriage certifictae 1845 it doesn't say that Father Peter is deceased.
Really impressed at all this help.

What about this Peter Ashton christened 16/1/1780 Farnworth Lancs to William and Alice married ANN Robinson 22/4/1799? he died 1835 so that fits with him not being on 1841 census.They had daughter Ann christened 30/8/1801and Son John 30/7/1797

If that is Ann's brother it still doesn't shed any light on who their mother was because it mentions a stepmother. ... But then again, could just be John's stepmother, not necessarily Ann's.

If you go to google maps and street view you can try and look and guess what sort of house they might have lived in, or which church............

Is Ann's birthplace given as Preston or is that referring to Joseph as head of household?
Also Ann's age seems to have suddenly leapt a few years in 1871.
The discovery of John Ashton, who must be Ann's brother is something to go on.
I just need their mother !!

In the 1871 census there is John Ashton, brother in law age 60 unmarried staying with them. So, correct family.

No, Ann was not Thompson. Nor was she Isabella's sister.
I have her marriage cert to Joseph Whalley in 1845. It states her name as Ann Ashton - spinster, aged 34. Charwoman of Back Mill St. Preston. Her father is named as Peter Ashton - Labourer.
The marriage was in a Catholic church so I assume she was christened in an R.C. church and there are very few R.C. records covered by the IGI.

I don't have access to 1851 census. Could anyone check for me please?

Tree on ancestry says Nancy was Nancy Thomson so is that her dad she is with on 1841 census?
