I have a marriage cert. from 1848, where there is a line through the names and proffessions of both brides and grooms fathers.........both of them were legitimate births, but in boths cases the fathers were dead, so presume thats why details were not entered on the cert.

so in answer to your question........ no not always, even when father was known.

If you veiw the original at registraion/records office in that area you can get that information, or if its a marriage that is already transcribed anywhere online.

If you put up the details we can help you....many London marriages are now available on Ancestry to subscribers.

Who are the couple and where did the marriage take place?

Had a look on the IGI and west Midlands bmD but they don`t have the marriage listed.

Do you know who the father is and are simply trying to confirm that this is the correct Peter Lawler?....If so have you found him in 1881 with parents and 1891 onwards with wife and children?....people quite often had parents staying with them as they got older.........if that was the case you may get confirmation of correct father that way on a later census.

i know its the right peter because its my husbands gg grandad im wanting to find out who is father was but he is not on the 1871 census and in 1881 he is boarding with another family no sign of any parents and in 1881 he is the only one with that surname. and then in the 1891 census he is with his wife .

Yes Michelle...I v`e checked him through then cenus up to 1911 and never any family living with him other than wife and many children.

So unless someone has parish records for Walsall, the only way to find out his fathers name is his birth or marriage certificate. I posted the birth cert. details earlier.

This is the same family as Peter was with in 1881;

I'm pretty sure the description for Sarah Lawley is daughter of wife, here's their marriage;

So I would hazard a guess that the Gibbons were Peters aunt and uncle??
