Hi – am trying to piece together this family but am hampered by the fact that most of the family had disappeared by the next census. Only Jane G (for Gilbert) Mills is with her parents – she is unmarried with child(!) Frederick, aged 4.

I can’t seem to locate (son) Thomas in 1851 – think I have found a baptism for him on 26 Dec 1818 (father being a mason at that time). Father Thomas is listed, I think, as a mason in the 1841 census and was born in Crowan.

I think I have Ann (dressmaker) marrying Francis Gilbert Richards in 1846, but again, no sign of the couple in 1851……

I’ve lost John after 1841, Mary marries Henry Sowden on 21 Dec 1845 in Camborne, is visible in 1851 but nowhere to be seem in 1861……

I know all about Elizabeth, Francis is with parents in 1851 and marries Jane Rowe on 7 May 1854. I think William marries Elizabeth Glasson on 25 Dec 1856 but cannot find them afterwards….

Any help with these missing persons is gladly welcome.

Have you taken into account the fact that on the 1841 Census the ages of people over the age of 15 were supposed to be rounded up or down to the nearest 5?

So when using the 1841 as a basis for finding them in future censuses you have to use the possible year of birth + 5 years, not the more common 2 years.

Thus Mary, for example, could have been born between 1821 and 1831 (1826 +/- 5 years).

Same applies to Ann, John and William, who also show as being age 15!

The rounding of age has been applied in your family, as you can tell by the ages all ending in either 0 or 5, except for the 2 youngest children.

I looked into this family last evening. It's the wrong one - the name patterns are wrong and I subsequently found the correct one.

However, it's a sad story in this family as Thomas was very successful but tragically died aged 42.....
4 of the daughters must have pledged to stay with their mother and are shown all together in 1861, 1871, 1881, 1891 and 1901. Follow their mother's death, they are still together in 1911!
