Hello, is anyone researching John Allan Turner from Nottingham? He was born in 1891, and appears on the 1911 Census as Allan Turner. His mother was Jane, and father George. He may have left Nottingham and changed his name during World War 1.

Thank you for any help,

Lynne Meek

Thanks for the reply but, if I have the right person, he would have been going under the name Taylor by that time, and his wife was Lilian Pryor (Sapsford).

I am waiting for a marriage certificate for John A Turner at Nottingham in 1911, possibly to Elizabeth Briggs.

Londonbelle, thank you, I have the Census records, and have applied for his birth certificate. I'm hoping to receive it next week.

We don't know why he changed his name, but it seems that he left a wife and possibly a small child. My daughter and I were discussing it today, and we think something must have happened to make him do that. He could have been my grandfather; the forenames are the same, the age is the same, he was born in Nottingham, and I had been told that his surname was probably Turner.

I am hoping that someone may have been researching his branch, wondering what happened to him, while I was researching my family and wondering who he was.

Chris Ho, thank you for your contribution. That confirms what we found on the weekend, with regard to George and Jane, but we did not have a marriage date.

This is all very exciting. I feel as if I may have found a whole new family.

Regards
Lynne

The best way to find people who are researching him (under either names) is to use the Search All member trees. That can be found top right under 'Search'.
If either names match with your own research, send a message to the tree owner.

Yes, that is definitely my grandparents in 1939. The two closed records are my mother and my aunitie who could, feasibly, be alive today.

Thanks for the notes on Albrey William Herbert Pryor, my Uncle Jim, who lived with us in Lichfield. I can't remember any talk about him being in the merchant navy, but that would explain why he isn't on the 1939 Census.

I never heard of John Taylor being a Special Constable, but the name Allan seems to have been unusual, so it possibly is him. We lived in Birmingham Road and I understood that they were there before his death. I couldn't find a Vicarage Lane in Leomansley, but there was one in Whittington. I seem to remember Mum talking about living in Leomansley. Is there any way I can get more information on this?

Yes, MargaretM, that is Lilian's first marriage, to Albrey Pryor.

That is all very interesting, it has given me a couple of leads to follow. Thank you, everyone, for your input. I have found three matches in the Family Tree search, so will pursue them.

(perhaps one of above might be able to shed more light on Police front!)

Have a look on google, Leomansley, if any help. (not familiar with it myself)

Chris Ho :), I had a look at Leomansley on Google Earth. There is no Vicarage Lane there now, but I know they lived somewhere near there before they moved to the house that I lived in. Yes, I have applied for John Allan Turner's Birth Certificate. I'm in Australia, so we have to wait longer - hopefully next week.

Londonbelle, It's interesting, but my John Allan Taylor was born in Nottingham. I don't have any Irish connections that I know of.

Didn't realise that you knew that he was actually born in Nottingham, I'll leave it on the Thread for elimination purposes :-)
