Don't worry - think he was Joseph Gilbert Finch but known as Gilbert

Thanks - Sylvia you're probably right about it being a nickname. I've found the other children who weren't living with Letitia.

Chris - that's useful, thank you. I had a quick peek at the Ancestry records very late last night and did spot the marriage with the correct parents names. The Shakell background is quite handy. :-)

the only thing is that I couldn't find a birth registration for a Joseph or Gilbert Finch at the relevant time
