Have I reached a dead end? Or is there any other way I can find out about my relative if his father is unknown on his birth certificate? Any ideas gratefully received.

Does he have a non-family name incorporated in his? That sometimes gives a clue about the father's identity.

Depending when this happened, have you managed to find a baptism for him? Sometimes the priest will make a note of who gossip says is the father.

Members have mentioned finding Court records where the father is told to support the mother and child. They may be able to advise how to research them.

If the birth took place in the last century, unless you can track down relatives who knew the mother, you have probably come to the end of the line.

His name is George James Humm/Hum, born 15/06/1851 in Gt Bromley, Essex. His mother's name was Charity Humm but on his birth certificate was father unknown. Also his mother's name was on his marriage certificate.
