Barbara Report 28 Aug 2015 10:43

Bridget Hanley/Hanly born abt 1813 or 1823 Longford Ireland. Married surname Gilhooley/Gillowley and had a son James born abt 1843. Bridget then went on to marry a Patrick Cassidy and their first child Mary Ann born abt 1856. The 1861 census states Mary Ann was born in Ireland but then all other census states Walsall Staffordshire but no trace of any birth can I find on UK bmd.
Please can anyone help it would be much appreciated.

Barbara

Barbara Report 28 Aug 2015 12:05

Hi Potty I cannot find Patrick in the 1871 census but do know he died in late 1871.

I have the birth cert for Thomas Cassidy and info on there is how I know his mother was Hanley and then Giliiowley and then Cassidy. Thomas Cassidy was the only one born in Leeds from 1856 to 1964 so I am sure this is right.

Mary Ann married a Simon Anskaijis name changed to Hansgate when she was abt. 16

Thank for your help

Hi Gritty
Thank you. I wonder if this is why Bridget called herself Ann on the 1871 census
also both their ages have changed

Thank you

Barbara

Barbara Report 28 Aug 2015 14:09

Hi Gritty
You have now I think answered a puzzle.
In the 1881 census there is a Bridget Cassidy born 1824 Ireland a widow and living with her is a Patrick Cassidy Brother in law and also her son Patrick born 1863
and a daughter named Margaret Hanley born 1853 in Warrington. I have tried and still can only find 1 Thomas Cassidy born in Leeds in 1861
I will now try and back track on this family.
Can you point me in the right direction for the info you found on Thomas's military record
Thanks again

Sorry, I should have put where the record came from- it's from Find My Past. If I get time later, I'll take another look, see if I can spot anything else.

Barbara/Gritty,

the Thomas on the Military record certainly looks like the one on the 1861/71 census. His age would be right. He was discharged in 1891 and seems to have married another Mary Ann and had two children, Mabel b1890, Leeds and Arthur b1891, Leeds. Both the children are in a home in 1901 and I can find Arthur going to Canada in 1905.

The military record is on FMP.

Margaret "Hanley" on the 1881 is married and I don't think it is "Hanley" - it looks more like "Houley" to me and there is this marriage:

Marriages Jun 1872 (>99%)

****Cassady Margaret Keighley 9a 348 Scan available - click to view
****HOWLEY Michael Keighley 9a 348 Scan available - click to view
TAYLOR John Keighley 9a 348 Scan available - click to view
Wade Mary Keighley 9a 348

The same family are on the 1871 and Bridget's husband is John.

Hi Potty
What I am sure of is that Mary Ann Cassidy married a Simon Anskaitijis and the name then change to Samuel Hansgate and her father was Patrick Cassidy
and on all the census's from then on it states she was born in Walsall but cannot find any trace of her birth

I have the birth cert for Thomas Cassidy born 1861 in Leeds and his father is Patrick and his mother Bridget Hanley formerly Gillowley has she was married before. This proves the 1861 census.

Then everything gets very cloudy. In a census for 1881 there is a Bridget Cassidy living in Bingley Yorkshire with a brother in law Patrick Cassidy unless one of her sisters also married a Patrick Cassidy and a son Patrick and a daughter Margaret Hanley.
I must be getting old has I am having a problem getting my head around this

Thanks for all the input

Potty Report 29 Aug 2015 12:11

Barbara, I think you can discount the Bingley family - this looks like them in 1871. Patrick, 44, is actually shown as a in separate household:

Name:Margaret Cassidy
Age:19
Estimated birth year:abt 1852
Relation:Daughter
Father's name:John Cassidy
Mother's name:Bridgett Cassidy
Gender:Female
Where born:Ireland
Civil Parish:Bingley
Ecclesiastical parish:Holy Trinity
Town:Bingley

John Cassidy 42
Bridgett Cassidy 48
James Cassidy 21
Margaret Cassidy 19
Mary Cassidy 16
Kathleen Cassidy 11
Patrick Cassidy 8
Patrick Cassidy 44
