Advice on orphans

Hi

I'm wondering if anyone knows how/where I would find out what happened to a couple of children after their parents died. Richard and William Barton were orphaned in 1823 and they both lived to be adults. I was just wondering if I'd be able to find out anywhere what happened inbetween.

Thanks
Samantha

Do you know when and where they were born and who their parents were ?

Samantha Report 18 Oct 2014 18:54

Richard was born 1814 and William 1816 both in Ribchester, Lancs. Their father Thomas died in May 1822 and their mother Margaret in Dec 1822. There was an infant sister Ann (Nancy) who died in 1823.

there are censuses with workhouse children as belonging to institutes .

rootgatherer Report 18 Oct 2014 20:06

They would be adults by the time of the 1841 census.

You could check the local archives of the area they were born to check if any records are available.

They may have been raised by grandparents of aunts and uncles.

Richard is married by 1841 and living in Ribchester. Perhaps he had remained ther after his parents died and lived with relatives.

there was no legal adoption in England until about 1927 ........................

what happened before then varied enormously

children could be put in an orphanage, and receive some training

in the work house, and receive some training

family, or friends, or even a neighbour might take them in

If they were put in an orphanage or work house, they might stay there until of working age ............ which was around the age of 10 or 12 at that time ................. or they might be transferred to a local person for them to work in the mill or on a farm, or some such.

Unfortunately, there are not many records of these events.

Richard Barton on the 1841 and 1851 is a Plasterer ...... that indicates he was set to a trade, ie apprenticed

William in 1841 is Lodger with Weaver, and in 1851 he is a Cotton Power Loom Weaver ........ incidentally he is on the 1851 as Buetow :-)

according to a tree on ancestry, there were several older children ..................

James Barton
1809 –

Thomas BARTON
1814 –

Richard Barton
1815 – 1860

William BARTON
1816 – 1879

Robert BARTON
1819 –

Ann BARTON
1822 – 1823

Nancy BARTON
1822 – 1823

Alice Barton
1822 –

If this tree is accurate ............... then older siblings could have taken in the younger ones.

No No No ...............

that tree is NOT accurate :-)

Thomas and Margaret Seed did not marry until 6 June 1814, both with consent of parents according to the lancs opc

Thomas was 31 when he died on 17 May 1822, and Margaret was 33 when she died in December

Her entry on lancs opc is very interesting.

I don't think I have ever seen one like it before!

I wonder if that was the reason why they were married with parental permission???

They both were certainly over 21 when they married!

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 19 Oct 2014 01:28

I'm wondering whether there might be any aunts or uncles who would have taken them in?

Thomas Barton was a Weaver on Richard's baptism, hence possible the reason why William became a Weaver

Ribchester was in Preston poor-law union. You might check if there are any workhouse records available, maybe in the Lancs R O in Preston.
