Robert Report 17 Oct 2014 10:43

Rob Clifton looking for information on:
John J Barrett DOB: 1865
born to John James Barrett and Rose Anne Barrett (nee: McClean)
John James Barrett was a member of the Royal Artillery as a Sergeant (No 2415)
1881 London census: John J Barrett born in S Town Suffolk was recorded as being a clerk on the railway and living with the above and a brother (Francis Bernard) and sister (Emily M)
By: 1887 no other UK record found

September 12 1887 a Thomas John Clifton arrived in Tasmania and enrols in the Tasmanian Permanent Artillery. We have family photos and correspondence suggesting that Thomas John Clifton is John J Barrett. I cannot find any record of the name change here in Tasmania and I am unsure just where to start looking for it in the UK.

On Thomas John Clifton’s death 22 September 1909 in Launceston Tasmania it was stated in his obituary that he was 44 years and 3 months on his death, making his birth date around 24 June 1865.
Any help or advice would be appreciated. I also have a family tree on My Heritage site.

.............on the 1911 census they state that they have had 5 children, 4 died but there is a line through number living. The one missing may well be John James Jnr. so I'm wondering if he may have gotten himself into trouble and the family disowned him. So, will take a look at criminal records to see if anything show there. Could also be a reason for him changing his name????

EDIT:- Sorry nothing obvios coming up yet :-(

Thank you Catherine and Chris for your responses, you are both onto the same person I have been researching. Below is further general family history:
Thomas J Clifton’s first 3 daughters knew the answers around TJC’s change of name (according to information from their immediate families) but always shut down when questioned by their off spring and have taken this information to their graves.
John James Barrett was living at 99 Colliers Water Lane until his death. We have photos and correspondence of TJ Clifton’s eldest daughter visiting 99 Colliers Water Lane in 1950 where she stayed with France B Barrett and his wife Allace.
The Barrett’s were Roman Catholic and when TJ Clifton married in Tasmania @ a Presbyterian Manse Anglican and the older members of Tasmanian family were anti Catholic ?????????

JJB/TJC was well educated as after he left the Tasmanian Permanent Artillery he became a police officer then a registrar/bailiff for 17 years before his death (a state employee in his time)
Another interesting fact is TJC first born was named Francis Bernard Clifton, after his brother.

In March 2015 I will be travelling to London and would like to visit some of the family graves. In Tas we have cemetery records online, can anyone put me in the right direction to find UK grave site in the Roman Catholic cemeteries in Croydon area London? I have been able to find a lot of information from headstones and am hoping to visit some sites in the hope of finding any linking information.

Interesting!!

or strange???

There is a Public Family tree on ancestry that has John Joseph Gregory .................. and says he married in 1884 to "unknown"

Tree owner ................
louise lawrence
Owner: Crean64

I found this marriage registration on freebmd, and I think this is what she is referring to ...............

Marriages Sep 1884 (>99%)
BARRETT John Joseph St. Geo. H. Sq. 1a 893
Chapman Kate St Geo Han Sq 1a 893
Ross Patience Mary A St Geo Han Sq 1a 893
Tricker Louie Owen St Geo H. Sq. 1a 893
Tricker Louis Owen St. Geo. H. Sq. 1a 893

he married either Kate Chapman OR Patience Mary ............... and Louis Tricker married the other one :-)

another tree is

Milsomfamilyhistory.me.uk
Owner: Derek Milsom

and this one shows

Patience Mary A Ross
Birth 1866-1867 in Hawkesbury

Marriage to John Joseph Barrett
1884 — Age: 18
St George Hanover Sq, London

and one child bron

I think this is wrong!

I can find John J Barrett and Patience in the 1891 and 1901 censuses ....... and John J says he was born in Limerick, Ireland :-)

Hi, I'am looking for any infomation on a Thomas John (Clifton) born abt 1865 died Sep 22 1909, he was married to a Martha Anne Georgina Batchelor born 1867 died April 13 1940. he was born in England, but once in Australia he changed his last name to Clifton. I was told the reason for him coming to Australia was because he was a Preist and he wanted to leave and when he got to Australia he changed his last name to Clifton. So I can only go so far without knowing his real last name.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Thank you
