A friend has asked me to try to trace her mother's birth

The lady in question was this one

First name(s) HELEN

Age -
Death quarter 3
Death year 2000
District CHELTENHAM
District number 4791C

Entry number 051
Date of registration mm/yy 0700

Her maiden name was REGAN

Year Of Marriage 1935
First name(s) HELEN
Last name REGAN
Marriage quarter 3
Marriage year 1935
Registration month -
MarriageFinderâ„¢ HELEN REGAN married
ALBERT F YOUNG
Spouse's last name YOUNG
District THORNBURY

The daughter says Helen was born in London, and was illegitimate, but I can't see a birth on freebmd.

Would someone with Ancestry be kind enough to see if a baptism can be found

I do realise that this is probably futile, but the helpers on here often seem to work miracles, so I'm crossing my fingers

Ricochet, sorry to ask the obvious, but has she got the marriage cert?

is your friend sure that Regan was her mother's maiden name?

brummiejan

brummiejan Report 23 Jul 2014 23:24

Looks like there was a birth 1937 in the right area, so am guessing it was maiden name.
Usual query! Do you have address and names of witnesses?

They were friends of the couple - not relatives.

Pam doesn't know how or why her mother moved from London to Gloucestershire.

Truth to tell, she is bit vague - not only about her mother, and this hasn't been helped by her being widowed recently.

I think that's what triggered the sudden desire to find out more about her mother

Not seeing a Helen Regan (1906) in 1911 census

Your friend's birth cert should confirm mother's maiden name

Ricochet

Ricochet Report 23 Jul 2014 23:46

The name is accurate as per all documents in my friend's possession

Helen did not know who her father was

Perhaps she was born outside England/Wales

brigid Report 24 Jul 2014 00:05

could Regan be the name of an earlier marriage or of an adoptive family
and NOT the maiden name ?
does your friend have Helen's birth certificate

brummiejan

brummiejan Report 24 Jul 2014 00:06

Brigid, she doesn't have the birth cert - that's the problem!
I wondered about whether she might have Irish origins maybe?

Would help if Pam could remember anything about maternal uncles and aunts. Does she know her grandmother's name?

was Helen raised by her mother, or was she adopted?

That's really what I meant by asking if your friend was certain that Regan was her maiden name.

If she was adopted, then Regan might be the adoptive family's name, not her birth surname.

Thanks all for your efforts. I appreciate them

I'll put this one to bed, as I really don't think progress is possible.

I've exhausted all the avenues I can think of and all I can access.

This baptism lookup request was a 'last hope', but it seems that no-one can find that either.

Could her original name be Ellen not Helen?

Gee

Gee Report 24 Jul 2014 09:52

Going on the idea that Helen was adopted and took on the name Regan?

No father is listed on this baptism, unfortunately no DOB entered on the record
