For our info - FMP transcription with a slightly better attempt than Ancestry. Father only has initial not full first name and it does look like the J that they have transcribed for son J Stoner. If Emm(er) was born Essex, could they still be in that area?

That's the same image and family. Emma's birth location is unclear as it has been overwritten. Should be Wansdworth, Surrey, as in 1891.

Thanks Chris. Error for Harris I think. Another family, another thread - with at least nine births! I'll look at freereg.

There is this Electoral Roll for 1901

Name: James Henry Stoner
Year: 1901
County or Borough: Greenwich
Ward or Division/Constituency: Greenwich
Street address: 9 St James' Place West, Roan Street

If anyone could do an address lookup for 1901 census this might be worth a look

Thanks, Thelma. I'm wondering whether St James' Place West is located in or off Roan Street? If this is the case, it looks as if it may have been missed off the census

That's the address that James Henry born 1880 gives on his Enlistment to the army in 1897.but I couldn't find them there in 1901

Catherine

Catherine Report 21 Jul 2014 18:27

Just to confirm that this looks to be the couple from the 1896 marriage:-

1911

James Henry Stoner Head Married Male 37 1874 Jobbing Hand At Any Work Deptford
Fanny Stoner Wife Married Female 34 1877 - Deptford
Hannah Stoner Daughter Single Female 10 1901 - Kent
Jessie Stoner Daughter - Female 5 1906 - -
Robert Stoner Son - Male 2 1909 - -

If James joined the army in 1897 then have you considered that he may not be on the 1901 census. This was the time of the Boer war so he may have been in South Africa?

It is definitely a Stoner family with Ancestry's 1911 STONE being a transcription error, obvious from the source. And James Henry is the 1860 one, there being at least six such births in the Greenwich RD.

Some time (between 1912 and 1929?) St James's Place West became Plume Place West but that seems to have gone now.

A listing of 1891 census streets shows
Roan Street, Greenwich West, GREENWICH
Roan Street, St Peter, GREENWICH

The census section with 9 Roan Street contains 'Roan Street from Church Street to Old Greycoat School, numbers 2 to 44 & 1 to 21. This seems to imply that there's more somewhere else. I've now found Roan St 90-126 and am still looking.

Thanks for all of the help. I'll post if and when I find St James Place West

Alan

Alan Report 23 Jul 2014 10:47

District 5 has 23-125 and 46-88 Roan Street. No St James Place. End of story I suspect. Closing.
