Good morning, still trying to locate some of my ancestors. Firstly, I have this family in my tree on Ancestry although some of the information regarding George Snr may not be correct, at the moment I am only surmising the information contained within his profile.

I have George Edward Bryant born 5 October 1863 at the Bridge Tavern, Strood. to Sophia Bryant and unknown father. Sophia was my great grand aunt. She was born 1843 and I've found her death but not 100% sure 1871.

Anyhow for the moment I'm interested in George.

In the 1871 Census George is living with his grandmother Sarah. Name given as George Bryant.

In the 1881 Census George again is living with his grandmother Sarah but his initial is given as George F Bryant.

In the 1891 Census George is living in Frindsbury, Kent with two sons George James Bryant born 1887 and William John Bryant born 1888. There is no mother given.

I've checked on CityArk and there is a baptism for George James on1 May 1887 in Fridndsbury, father George and mother Emily.

I also checked CityArk and found a baptism for William John Bryant on 7 October 1888 but the father's name is given as George James Bryant and again mother Emily.

In the 1891 Census George Snr is living next door to his mother's sister, Mary Ann and her new husband William Philips. Also living as a neighbour is a Sarah Howe (Howell) a widow.

In the 1911 Census I find a George Bryant living with (although) it states it's his wife a Sarah T Howell. They have various children with the surname Howell Bryant.

I can find nothing on George in the 1901 Census.

If anyone could please help in the above, hope it's not too confusing. Am just looking for another pair of eyes or two or three to try and see if you come up with anything different for my George Edward Bryant and his two sons. As ever, any help would be greatly appreciated. Any questions, and if I can help I will answer them.

Kind regards

Kathryn

Are you confident that Sarah Packman is his grandmother? Did she re-marry as Widow Bryant at some point, or are you assuming that she was his paternal grandmother?

I'm not having any luck with the 1901 census.

Kathryn

Kathryn Report 18 Apr 2014 11:24

Hi, am 100% confident that Sarah Packman is George's paternal grandmother. She was a widow when she married George Packman. Am glad the 1881 Census image has been cleared up that it is George E. I think I found the marriage for Sarah to George Packman on CityArk as well.

Might this be the marriage between a George John Bryant and Emily?

Argghh!!!! Sorry - the image for 1881 is ...........F.............

Sorry for my error in typing - the brain was mulling over the possibility that the details were incorrectly transcribed in the Summary Books

Kathryn Report 18 Apr 2014 11:34

Hi, I will look to see if I can see the marriage of George and Emily on CityArk. Although the image on the 1881 Census does say F am 100% sure this is the same George Snr.

Picking apart 1911

1911 England Census about Sarah Howell
Name: Sarah Howell
Age in 1911: 43
Estimated birth year: abt 1868
Relation to Head: Wife - image says widow
Gender: Female
Birth Place: Sheerness Sheppy, Kent
Civil Parish: Strood Intra
County/Island: Kent
Country: England
Street address: 11 Collis St, Strood, Rochester
Marital Status: Widowed
Occupation: Housekeeper
Registration district: Strood
Registration District Number: 45
Sub-registration district: Strood
ED, institution, or vessel: 14
Household schedule number: 260
Piece: 3869
Household Members:
Name Age
George Bryant 47
Sarah Howell 43 < housekeeper widow!! Born Sheerness
Harriett Bryant Howell 12
Grace Bryant Howell 8
Walter Ernest Bryant Howell 4
Edith Maud Bryant Howell 2

Details re the length of marriage and number of children have been entered against George, but have been reassigned to Sarah
married 25 years, 10 children born, 9 surviving.

I would suggest the 'housekeeper' was his common-law wife as he was still married to someone else. The children's middle name of Bryant suggests that he was their father.

Well done Andrew!!!

I wonder what happened to the two sons.

Have you found the sons in the 1911 census Kathryn??

Kathryn

Kathryn Report 18 Apr 2014 11:47

Well done, it always, well in my case takes another pair of eyes. I have just checked for the marriage of George and Emily and they were married on 22 June 1886. Her name is Emily Jane Bradley, her father being William. The witnesses were Joseph H West and Charlotte Margaret West. Against George's name no father is given. This whole thing has thrown me completely as George's middle name is given differently on several occasions albeit I believe he is one in the same George born 1863 although of course I am by no means an expert at this research. Not sure if it is possible to trace George Snr by his previous children George James and William John. Hope I'm not confusing the whole thing too much and jumping from one thing to another.

Kind regards

Hi Andrew and Prickly Holly, was busy typing my last post and noted you have added to the thread. Excellent on the 1901 Census. Yet again there is a discrepancy as George is shown as being born 1865. Why couldn't they get facts right way back then. These things are sent to try us. And look how they've spelt George's surname.

Kind regards

Hi all, this all wonderful information, thank you so much. In answer to Prickly Holly no I haven't found George James and William John in the 1911 Census nor the 1901 Census.

Have just added that 1901 Census to my tree on Ancestry for George Bryant Snr so as not to lose any info. If for any reason at a later stage it is not my George then I can delete it. It's just that I don't, at this stage, want to spend a fortune on certificates.
