Louise Report 17 Apr 2014 14:36

I am asking for information about my grandmother Fanny Hookings and her family. I know she was born in Exeter in 1889, she married my grandfather Edward Henry Hore in Exeter in 1905. I have found information that she was also known as Phillips. I have found a Fanny Phillips who was living with my grand father, grandmother described as a boarder, Does anyone have any information about her and her family.

Hi Louise and welcome to the boards.

can you clarify all that a bit? it helps to refer to people by name rather than as "my grandmother" for instance

the information that she was known as Phillips - is that the information where someone is living with someone and described as a boarder? is it in a census? can you post the details?

it sounds as if her parents were unmarried and she was originally registered at birth in her mother's surname but adopted her father's surname (or possibly stepfather's), not an uncommon situation

by the way it is very very unlikely that anyone who reads this has information about the family, but many other members can help find information, just need to know what you know!

Slightly more detail on the marriage though if Louis has a copy of the cert proper it would help to know if it says anything about the name and occupation of her father, if one is mentioned, and names of witnesses in case they give a lead.

To clarify my post Fanny Hookings was my grandmother. It says in the 1911 Census that she was born in Exeter. She was living then in East Stone house, married to my grandfather Edward Henry Hore. I found a bitrh recorded for a Fanny Hooking in Exeter, which I think is hers. The information about being called Phillips has come from another source which was old when I found it and I have not been able to contact this source. From checking the census I have found Fanny Phillips living with Sarah Ann Joint. She was my the grandmother of Edward Henry Hore by her first husband Edward Hore. What I am not sure is if this information is correct and if there is anyway I can find out.. Some one has tried to research her in the past and may have some information.

this is the Fanny HookingS (spelling counts!) birth in Exeter

Births Jun 1876
Hookings Fanny Exeter 5b 87

this is your Fanny in 1911 as posted above

Fanny Hore
Age in 1911:35
Estimated birth year:abt 1876
Relation to Head:Wife
Birth Place:Exeter, Devon

so yes, that seems like a match

but you started out saying she was born in 1889, not 1876, and that has created considerable confusion!

as Mike posted

1881
John Joint 65
Sarah Ann Joint 55
Laura Emily Hore 19 - step daughter<<< note surname
****Fanny Phillips 5 - border - exeter

(Lauras is the stepdaughter of John i.e. daughter of Sarah)

and you have now told us that Sarah Ann Joint was previously Sarah Ann Hore by her first marriage and the grandmother of Fanny Hookings Hore's husband

so there is certainly a good connection there to suggest that is her - she was a boarder in her husband's grandparents' house as a child and young woman

the Fanny Hockin/Hocking/Hokking that safc has traced would be this one

Births Sep 1875
Hockin Fanny Okehampton 5b 371

(Okehampton covered Hatherleigh)

so that one is not your Fanny I think

(Hocking and variations is a very Cornwall name ... also note the line under my post Louise, I am a Hore descendant from Cornwall, or so the DNA says, and our DNA project is working to find connections between the Devon Hore lines and the Cornwall Hore/Hoar/Hoare lines)
