Jane Searle then Robinson/Kolter/Crews

ProfilePosted byOptionsPost Date

Andrew Report 15 Sep 2012 15:55

I am posting in the hope that someone may be able to see something I have missed.

Sorry in advanve for the long post.

My Gt Grandmother is Jane Searle (various spellings)

Depending on which Census you look at she is born in either Cork, Ireland or Swansea about 1850/1.

The first time I can find her is when she married in 1875 as Jane Searle Robinson a widow, in Swansea to Philip Kolter. Her father is shown as Richard Searle, a Master Mariner.

She has one son also Philip Edwin, soon after. Both Phillips die in 1875/6.

I cannot find her in 1881 census.

She then marries George Edwin Crews in 1885. Fathers details the same as previous marriage.

She has a son, George Edwin Searle Crews.

Both Georges are on 1891 census, but Jane is not.

I have her and family on 1901 and 1911 census plus all subsequent history.

On her death in 1921, the name of the informant is J Kolter. This turns out to be Joseph Searle Kolter. The earliest I can find him is on 1891 census as Joe Kolter in Leicester. He joins the army (not on 1901 census) and I have all his subsequent history. Again on the various records his place of brith is either Cork or Swansea. I cannot find a birth for him in England and Wales or Ireland.

Can anyone help with

i. A birth for Jane

ii. A birth for Joseph

iii. Anything at all for Richard Searle.(There are several namesakes born Cornwall, but I can't tie any of them to 'my' Richard)

Sorry for length of post.

Very grateful for any help

Andy

Could you give an approximate birth year for Joseph Searle Kolter?
Thank-you

Date of Registration: Apr-May-Jun 1959
Age at Death: 84

If this is Jane's marriage it is Bristol not Swansea:

Could Joseph have been born before the marriage?

Sorry, Joseph born about 1875. One of the army records on FMP says 1863, but that's wrong.

Choccy....

Very good spot for Jane!!

I already had George in the Workhouse. He his actually a teacher there, not an inmate, but I hadn't seen Jane.

So thank you for finding her!

There are several Richards on the new Masters and Mates register on Ancestry, but cannot tie any of them up.

There is also a birth for Joseph Kelter in Ireland in 1875, but he is not mine (parents Thomas and Bridget)

Thanks to everyone who as contributed. A lot of new info. All of the family worked in Workhouses and associated hospitals and schools for the next 50 odd years. The last Kolter only died in 2000 and was a headteacher, so kept the family connections with education going.
