That is what I understood so thanks for the clarification.
Just need some info on Jonas/Joseph now.
He is not on the 1911 with her but that is when he should be on the Grive.
Possible sighting before the marriage here.

Nothing coming up in the newspaper archives. Looking at the divorce papers it doesn't appear that her husband responded to the petition and there is no mention of a decree being granted so I'd suggest that the divorce wasn't finalised.
Given that she married after the death of her first husband then I suspect that her 1898 marriage certificate to Jonson would just say she was a widow.

It was the first husband Robert James Grieve. This is what I have so far.

Hi LK, just to clarify - it's the divorce between Evelyn and which husband that you're interested in? When was the divorce filed?
I could take a look in the newspaper archives, it would obviously also be of interest to John.
|
Thanks Patchem. I have heard from the original poster so may post some requests here.
Evelyn filed for divorce one year after marriage after his excessive violence in front of witnesses and his adultry. I have the record on Ancestry but have not found if the divorce was granted or if there are newspaper reports. LK

Good Luck with your research, LadyKira.

Don't know if you're still searching for any Scanes relatives or the Swansea connection. I'm part of the Swansea branch of the Scanes family. My Great Grandfather, Mark Scanes came to Swansea around the mid 1860s. He was born in Newton St Cyres near Crediton in1844 and I have uncovered an Uncle named William showing as living in Newton St Cyres in the 1851 census but I can find no trace of him in later census information. I know my grandfather was in contact with relatives in the London area but have no more details as regards them. If I can help you further please let me know.

Possible for 1891:
1891 England Census about Evelyn Grieve Name: Evelyn Grieve Age: 36 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1855 Relation: Lodger Gender: Female Where born: Poplar, London, England Civil Parish: Bromley St Leonard Ecclesiastical parish: St Michael and All Angels Town: Bromley County/Island: London Country: England Registration district: Poplar Sub registration district: Bromley ED, institution, or vessel: 31 Neighbors: View others on page Household Members: Name Age William Linngstone 57 Harriett Linngstone 48 William Linngstone 20 Florence Linngstone 18 Harriett Linngstone 13 John M Ward 57 Evelyn Grieve 36
Evelyn is noted as married, but then under occupation it says "single"

Evelyn Scanes was one of the children of William Scanes and his wife, Octavia Hoard.
Although I've seen on sites external to GenesReunited, various mentions of Evelyn's siblings, I'm trying to find anyone who has researched William and Octavia's family to a great extent, and who might either have photos of Evelyn, or know more about her.
Evelyn was born 31.7.1859 in Poplar, and was the fifth child of William and Octavia. In December 1877 Evelyn married Robert James Grieve (sometimes recorded as Grieves) in the Mile End area.
Robert Grieve[s] died in the 1890s, and towards the end of the same decade, his widow, Evelyn, marrie again, and this time to a Jonas Jonson (sometimes spelled as Johnson).
Although Jonas was shown in the 1901 census with the forename of 'Joseph', and although he was said to have been born in 'London', his name was definitely Jonas, and rather than London, he actually hailed from Norway!
Jonas died in 1916, but as to where he was buried, or when Evelyn died and was buried, is yet to be discovered.
Is there a Scanes descendant/researcher who knows anything about the Evelyn mentioned above, and knows whether she had any children from either her first or second marriage? If so, I really look forward to hearing from you.
My connection might be considered 'periphery', for although Jonas Jonson was my great grandfather, his first wife appears to have left him after their daughter (Minnie Jonson) was born in 1882 at Swansea, Glamorgan.
Whilst there is a possibility that there was some connection post-1911 between Jonas/Evelyn in the Upton Park area, and Minnie Jones (nee Jonson) in Swansea, it is not known at the moment what that connection was, other than in our family's possession is a n oil painting of a ship called the 'Grive', on which Jonas served between c1905 and 1911 as a 'Ship's Carpenter'.
How the painting came into the family is yet to be discovered, but if there's any Scanes family member who knows about the Poplar/Swansea connection, or about Evelyn Jonson/Johnson, formerly Grieve(s) nee Scanes, I'll be more than happy to hear from you!
John
