Evelyn Report 8 Mar 2009 20:36

My mother was Diane Leslie Macleod, she was born in 1906, her father was Robert macleod, Seaforth Highlanders. At quite a young age mother was sent to live with an Aunt Kate in Stornoway, Isle of Lewis, sadly I do not know the surname of Aunt Kate but do know that in the same household were cousins Donald and Ishbel. Mother attended school in Stornoway but I do not know which school. I can find no trace of mother prior to 1929 when she married my father H R J Roy in London, please can anyone help me trace her?

tree on ancestry

http://trees.ancestry.co.uk/pt/person.aspx?tid=5951350&pid=-1348459469

has Ishbel on but not Robert

Donald's wife is shown as Kate Webster Rodger

FannyByGaslight

FannyByGaslight Report 8 Mar 2009 23:45

on the marriage its

kate rodgers wylie and on the death cert it
kate ilses wylie rodgers
or all those names but a different order maybe

and robert i believe was donalds brother
but never found them together as i said even though i spent,MANY MANY hours searching

edit,,maybe they were cousins,or diane made up the name to cover the fact she was illegit, but then,
a birth should have been found for her
i will send a message to the tree owner that you cited on evelyns behalf as its easier than explaining how!!

Just for future ref, Evelyn, could you now stick to this thread and not start more?

It's actually against the rules, and if someone hadn't recognized the subject matter, people would have been wasting time doing the same things all over.

And of course, post answers and info in the thread, don't send 'em by private message ...

I got a very nice PM from Evelyn -- we know she's reading the thread!

Evelyn, it's easier than it looks. And we know they don't make it look easy.

Look at the top of the thread right under "Trying to Find: Trying to find mother".

There's a purple button that says "Reply".

Click it. A box opens. Type in the box. Click Submit. Your message will get added at the end of the thread of messages.

Just exactly as easy as clicking on a name and sending a private message! But it saves everybody else having to copy what you send privately and come back to the thread and paste it in here where it's needed.

Ann McLeod 20
John McDonald 35

Name: Murdo McLeod

Estimated Birth Year: abt 1816
Relationship: Head
Spouse's name : Peggy
Where born: Lochs, Rossshire
Registration district: Lochs
Civil Parish: Lochs
County: Ross and Cromarty

Uncle Donald was 43 in 1901, which matches better with

Donald McLeod aged 12 in 1871

than with

Donald McLeod aged 12 in 1861

... but I may have missed the train somewhere mid-thread ...

FannyByGaslight

FannyByGaslight Report 9 Mar 2009 23:55

from earlier pm correspondence with evlyn i do know that what she really wants is
to find out where her mother was born
to find the birth of her mother
in the uk or overseas
which will then give her
her grandmothers name and her grandfathers for sure

so we are looking for

diane leslie mcleod/macleod circa 1906/08
and the leslie is spelt correctly

i wondered if it was her mothers maiden name or even if she was illegitimate and that was her ,,real ,,fathers name
